Pandemic Flu Information

More than one kind of flu virus will be spreading this season, including the seasonal flu and the H1N1 (swine) flu.  A pandemic flu is a worldwide epidemic.  The strains of influenza virus that cause pandemics are different than those that cause epidemics because no one in the world is immune to the pandemic viruses.  On average, influenza pandemics occur about three times every century.

Symptoms of flu include fever or chills AND cough or sore throat.  In addition, symptoms of flu can include runny nose, body aches, headaches, tiredness, diarrhea, or vomiting.  If you become sick, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees).  Also remember to cover your coughs and sneezes and wash your hands with soap and water frequently.

The best way to be protected against influenza is to get an influenza vaccine each year.  To prevent the next influenza pandemic, the influenza vaccine will have to contain the strain of influenza virus that is causing the pandemic.  This means an effective vaccine can't be made until a pandemic begins.
