Our office is primarily devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems in chlidren. We have a special interest in the treatment of stabismus (eye muscle problems such as crossed eyes), amblyopia or lazy eye, ptosis or drooping eyelids and nystagmus. There are also a large number of other diseases that affect children's eyes including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases and genetic disorders.
We also make a determination as to whether glasses are required: sometimes children as young as four months require glasses. We prescribe glasses when they are needed for the child and explain the times glasses need to be worn. Contact lenses are also fit and dispensed.
Although our office primarily sees patients from birth to age 18 years, we also see adults over age 18 who have double vision (diplopia) or eye muscle problems. Surgery and other treatments are often beneficial for these patients, regardless of age.
Routine eye exams are performed and we recommend that every child have at least a thorough eye screening by age four years. Families with a history of amblyopia (or lazy eye) should have their children examined by age two years.
Dr. Richards spends a great deal of time keeping up with the latest treatments, innovations and advances in the field of pediatric ophthalmology, allowing you to access the most current methods of treating your child's eye problem.
Dr. Richards has also been seeing patients in Monroe at the offices of Eye Associaties of Northeast Louisiana. The offices are equipped with the very latest pediatric fixation devices with a cartoon at the end of room and multiple computer driven pediatric vision testing symbols for optimal exams. He sees patients, by appointment only, the first and third Wednesday of each month. Surgery is performed at the day surgery center of Eye Associates of Northeast Louisiana. To schedule an appointment call 1-800-437-0153.
